REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK - Badan Kesehatan Dunia WHO baru-baru ini mengingatkan bahaya radiasi dari ponsel yang diklasifikasikan sebagai "sangat mungkin berisiko kanker". Badan ini sebelumnya telah melakukan peninjauan dari efek gelombang elektromagnetik terhadap kesehatan manusia.
Deklarasi tersebut didasarkan pada bukti dalam penelitian atas mereka yang menggunakan ponsel secara intensif. Diketahui, intensitas tinggi pemakaian ponsel mengakibatkan peningkatan risiko glioma, sebuah bentuk kanker otak ganas.
Kesimpulan yang diambil International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), badan di bawah WHO, berlaku untuk radiasi elektromagnetik frekuensi radio pada umumnya, meskipun sebagian besar penelitian di daerah ini berpusat pada telepon selular.
Temuan adalah puncak dari pertemuan IARC yang diikuti 31 ilmuwan dari 14 negara untuk mengkaji ratusan hasil penelitian sebelumnya yang telah dipublikasi tentang risiko kanker yang ditimbulkan oleh medan elektromagnetik.
Jonathan Samet, seorang ilmuwan di University of Southern California, yang memimpin grup itu menyatakan, "Mungkin ada beberapa risiko, dan oleh karena itu kita harus tetap mencermati hubungan antara ponsel dan kanker."
Dalam menunjuk bidang frekuensi radio sebagai "mungkin karsinogenik", WHO telah menempatkan mereka setara dengan sekitar 240 agen lain yang merugikan, termasuk medan magnet tingkat rendah, bedak, dan bekerja sebagai dry cleaner.
Laporan tersebut tidak menemukan mekanisme yang jelas bagi gelombang menyebabkan tumor otak. Radiasi dari ponsel terlalu lemah untuk menyebabkan kanker dengan memecah DNA, yang menyebabkan para ilmuwan mencari faktor penyebab lain.
